Mother’s Day Gifts: I’m Not That Typical Mom

Am I the only person in the world who hates stereotypical Mother’s Day gifts? I mean, I like chocolates (but it has to be GOOD chocolate, preferably dark and no weird oils or gums), but if I’m never going to finish an entire box (sugar isn’t my thing, so cakes and cookies (and I love cookies, but one cookie can last me two or more days, depending on size) aren’t that great either. I love macarons, but again, I’m never going to finish. At least they’re small?). I’m not into flowers either. And due to the pandemic, spas aren’t even open (and really, I’m not that big a fan). Brunches are good (in fact, I LOVE brunch!), but only if no one has to cook (LOL!)… And that brunch must include something savoury. Maybe scrambled eggs or avocado toast. I can’t just have pancakes or French toast.

The macaron above is certainly something I like, but anything more than half a dozen will likely get wasted. Especially in 2021, when we have to socially distance

Everything is just…so pink! And sugary. I get most people like sugar, but I’m not most people. Give me hummus and crackers or vegetables and I’m GOOD! Or tea. However, I wouldn’t mind, say, a gift card to Sephora or Holt Renfrew – if you’re talking about “girly” stuff (and no, I won’t be buying scents of any kind. Again, ew). I can’t be alone in this, can I? I mean, I just can’t! I’ve seen all those pandemic-friendly savoury Mother’s brunch Day packages, and to be honest, most suck. Especially when you’re someone who hates breakfast potatoes…or most kinds of potatoes.

First world problems? Definitely, so I really shouldn’t be complaining. Especially during a pandemic. And I know that there are plenty of people who find Mother’s Day “triggering.” Perhaps they lost a child or did not grow up with a mom or mother-like figure. Or their mom is no longer with them. However, I just want to put it out. Not everyone is into scents, chocolate and loads of sugar. Some of us eat healthfully year round (and it’s not because we’re on a “diet,” but because it’s just how we are. We shouldn’t be shamed for that). We appreciate chocolate and cookies here and there, but we’re the type who’ll never finish a whole box. I realize that this is about appealing to the majority, but companies need to rethink. They need to realize that some of us prefer other things! Anyway, I hope everyone out there celebrating has an amazing (socially distanced) Mother’s Day. AKA Pandemic Mother’s Day II.
